‘Few spots I’m looking at’: Madge reveals new pair in WCC selection hunt — NRL Daily (2026)

A high-stakes selection dilemma is unfolding for the Broncos' World Club Challenge squad, and coach Michael Maguire is keeping everyone on their toes.

The Hunt for the Perfect 20

Maguire, with a keen eye for detail, is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to assemble the ideal 20-man squad for the upcoming World Club Challenge. But here's where it gets controversial: he's keeping his cards close to his chest, refusing to reveal the final lineup until the very last moment.

"There are still several positions up for grabs," Maguire revealed, adding that the club's flight to England on February 9th will be a tense one as players await their fate.

The game against Hull KR, scheduled for February 20th (AEDT), is a crucial test for the Broncos, and Maguire wants to ensure his team is at its sharpest. He believes that keeping the competition alive for those on the bubble will drive the team to new heights.

"I want to see everyone give it their all in training. Only then will I make my final decision next week," Maguire told Code Sports.

The Great Selection Mystery

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the starting lineup. Maguire is also considering the impact of these selections on team dynamics and morale. With six spots still undecided, the Broncos' fate hangs in the balance.

Star back rower Brendan Piakura's absence opens up an opportunity for former Dolphin Aublix Tawha, who is favored to fill Piakura's shoes. But Maguire isn't stopping there. He's also eyeing new recruits Grant Anderson and Tom Duffy, who have impressed during training.

"'Obs' (Tawha) is definitely a strong contender," Maguire said. "We've lost key players like Kobe Hetherington and Tyson Smoothy, so there are some exciting opportunities for others to step up."

In addition to these changes, Ezra Mam will start at five-eighth, with Ben Hunt moving to hooker, and Cory Paix taking a spot on the bench.

So, who will make the cut? Will Maguire's strategy pay off? The Broncos' journey to the World Club Challenge is a tale of strategic selections and intense competition.

What do you think? Should Maguire keep his selection process a secret until the last moment? Share your thoughts in the comments!
