Tigers' Key Players Make Surprising Choices, Shaping the Team's Future
In a surprising turn of events, Gleyber Torres and Jack Flaherty, two seasoned players, decided to stick with the Detroit Tigers, forgoing the allure of the free agent market. This decision, made by mid-November, solidified two crucial pieces of the Tigers' roster for the upcoming season.
A Symbolic Win for Torres
Torres, who joined the Tigers on a one-year, $15 million deal in the 2024-25 offseason, had a clear plan. After an average 2024 with the Yankees, he aimed to prove his worth and then secure a long-term deal. However, the Yankees didn't offer him a qualifying offer, making the Tigers' $22.025 million QO a significant milestone. Torres saw it as a chance to showcase his skills and earn a well-deserved raise.
"I'm proud the organization believed in me with the qualifying offer. It's a challenging commitment, but I get to prove my value and help the team," Torres shared with MLB.com's Jason Beck.
After exploring the market, Torres and his agents at Octagon found it an easy choice to return to Detroit, where he felt at home and was eager to build on his successful 2025 first half, which was marred by a sports hernia in the second half.
Flaherty's Comfort in Detroit
Flaherty, on the other hand, has chosen Detroit for three consecutive offseasons. He initially signed a one-year deal in 2023, winning a World Series with the Dodgers after a mid-season trade. Returning to Detroit on a two-year, $35 million deal, he added a $10 million bonus for his 15th start in 2025. With his reps at Wasserman checking the market, Flaherty decided that the Tigers offered more than just money; they offered a chance to win.
"The Tigers are an incredible team with an amazing group of guys. I've improved here, and I want to be part of this," Flaherty told the Detroit News' Chris McCosky.
Flaherty's 2025 numbers weren't as impressive as his 2024 season, which could've made the free agent market less appealing. His 4.64 ERA over 161 innings, with a 27.6% strikeout rate, was offset by subpar walk, hard-hit ball, and barrel rates. Yet, the Tigers' faith in him remains strong.
The Tigers' Offseason Strategy
Retaining Torres and Flaherty, re-signing Kyle Finnegan, and signing Kenley Jansen and Drew Anderson were the Tigers' primary moves for most of the offseason. The team made a splash earlier this month by signing Framber Valdez and the legendary Justin Verlander, strengthening the pitching staff. This move could shift Flaherty to the fifth starter position.
With Torres and Spencer Torkelson leading the right-handed bats, the Tigers' lineup remains left-leaning. Despite rumors linking them to Alex Bregman, the Tigers kept their lineup largely unchanged, putting the onus on Torres and his fellow hitters to deliver a more consistent 2026.
