Struggling with Tax Refunds: One Taxpayer's Frustrating Journey
'I paid £11,000 too much in taxes, and now HMRC isn't giving it back.'
Imagine this: you've just paid too much in taxes, and you're waiting for a refund. But what if that refund never comes? This is the story of one taxpayer who had to borrow money to cover school and university fees for their children while they waited for HMRC to process their rebate.
Raoul, from London, found himself in this situation after being out of work for almost a year. During this time, he paid the top rate of income tax at 45%, but when he started consulting work, he earned significantly less. As a result, he was due a refund of almost £12,000. However, despite completing a self-assessment return and applying for the refund online, he hasn't heard from HMRC since.
'I had to borrow money on my credit card to tide me over until I started my new full-time job later in the year,' he told the Times. 'I’ve tried applying for a refund online a few times and calling HMRC.'
This situation is not isolated. Some people are waiting a year or more for HMRC to refund overpaid tax and national insurance contributions (NICs). In some cases, refunds that were previously processed within a few weeks are now taking 10 months or more, according to an investigation by Guardian Money.
'We apologise and can confirm we’ve now refunded what he was owed, having conducted additional checks to ensure he received the right amount,' HMRC said. But for Raoul and others in similar situations, the wait continues.
