Imagine if Michael Douglas' iconic portrayal of Gordon Gekko in 'Wall Street' had gone to someone else! It's a mind-boggling thought, isn't it? But here's the twist: this role, which earned Douglas an Academy Award, was initially offered to two other A-listers. And this is the part most people miss...
During a recent panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Douglas revealed that director Oliver Stone first approached Warren Beatty and then Richard Gere for the role. Douglas, who had no idea he wasn't Stone's first choice, shared his honest reaction: "But saying that, those poor b—–ds. I mean, how do you think they feel? You know, with a picture they turned down."
But here's where it gets controversial... Douglas went on to win the Oscar for his performance, solidifying his place in Hollywood history. And he didn't stop there! He reprised his role as Gekko in the 2010 sequel, 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,' where the character, newly released from prison, seeks revenge on his Wall Street rivals.
Douglas has now shared that he's releasing a memoir, which will delve into his five-decade-long career, his relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones, his battle with stage four cancer, and other personal struggles. In an Instagram post, he joked, "There's a lot to tell—before I forget."
Douglas and Zeta-Jones, who have been married for an impressive 25 years, celebrated their anniversary in November 2025. Zeta-Jones' Instagram caption for their anniversary was a heartfelt tribute: "25 years ago today, I walked down the aisle. The intoxicating aroma of flowers, the glow of the candles, the resounding harmonious Welsh choir and you at the end of the long walk waiting for me, looking at me the way only you can. I love you today as I did then. Thank you sweetheart."
So, what do you think? Could anyone else have pulled off the role of Gordon Gekko like Michael Douglas did? And what impact might it have had on his career and the legacy of 'Wall Street'? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
